What is the Cleanest Natural Air Filter for Your Home?

Activated carbon, also known as activated carbon, is an odorless and highly absorbent material that works wonders in purifying indoor air. Bamboo charcoal is another effective natural air filter for your home. We have tested more than 50 air purifiers in the past nine years and our measurements have shown that the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty is the best of them. It is powerful enough to be used in a large room, quiet enough to be used near sleeping areas, and cost-effective enough to be installed in multiple rooms.

The Levoit Vital 200S also performed well in our tests and is similar to the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty in terms of energy efficiency, noise emission, and the ability to turn off the screen while maintaining the fan configuration of your choice. However, since it is a new version (released in January 2), we have not had enough time to test it for long-term use yet. HEPA air purifiers are great for filtering out wildfire smoke from the air inside your home. We have placed our purifiers in several homes for years to evaluate their performance in different environments, their durability against noisy children and other sources of harm, and the positive (or annoying) aspects that reveal themselves over time. In conditions where air quality is poor, such as when your area is affected by a nearby wildfire, we recommend running air purifiers at a high temperature for one hour and then running them at a quiet or medium setting to create and maintain clean air in the home.

We tested this method with the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty and the Airmega 400 for three hours, one hour at high temperature and two at medium temperature. The Honeywell InSight HPA5300B is a large space model that would likely perform well; however, after measuring its electricity demand, we ruled it out. Compared to our choice for large spaces, the Blueair Blue Pure 211+, the Honeywell consumes a lot of power, consuming 33, 60, 94 and 117 watts at its four speeds (from low to turbo), respectively. The Blue Pure 211+ has a maximum output of 64 watts and is a slightly more powerful machine in terms of clean air supply rate (CADR). Years of testing have shown that a good air purifier creates and maintains excellent air quality simply when it is allowed to operate continuously at a moderate setting. Activated carbon air filters are known to be effective in removing harmful gases and odors from the air; if you find that they frequently combat unpleasant odors in your home, it's a good idea to buy one.

One of the easiest ways to purify the air in your home is to periodically change the air filter in the heating and cooling system. HVAC air filters are a first line of defense for keeping particles out of the air you breathe, as well as from heating and cooling equipment. Natural air filters can be used in the home as needed to provide additional purification from specific contaminants. We have not found evidence that Dyson purifiers are superior to other purifiers in distributing filtered air throughout the room; purifiers work best when placed in adjoining spaces. If you want to clean the air in both the living room and bedroom, for example, it's best to have a purifier for each room or carry only one purifier with you. A simple yet effective natural air filter is salt lamps; while they may not produce enough negative ions to clean the air well on their own, they can help clean it in other ways.

Indoor plants are also great natural filters; they can help filter out pollutants from the air naturally. An air filter is still a good idea even with all these easy and affordable ways to clean indoor air. Our years of testing have shown that any purifier of the right size will quickly deliver filtered air to the farthest corner of a room. It is also important to regularly change boiler filters and clean or replace air conditioning filters.
